In an effort to address the needs of our patients, eyeDOCS optometric clinics now offer advanced Dry Eye Treatments.
Irritation due to Dry Eye Disease (DED) is one of the most common complaints heard by our optometrists. Burning eyes, red eyes, gritty eyes and, yes, eyes that water abundantly! These are all possible symptoms of DED.
Improper lubrication of the eyes can be caused by many different factors. Aging, systemic diseases, medication consumption, dry workplace environments, and lid disease are all contributing factors. To properly treat DED, a thorough assessment of the condition needs to be carried out. In the Dry Eye Clinic a battery of tests will be performed to assess the quantity and quality of the tear film and the health of the lids and associated glands. These tests will include state of the art equipment as well as tried and true methods.
Once the underlying causes of the dry eye condition have been identified, a treatment plan will be developed and initiated. Treatments can include medications (drops, ointments, and/or pills), lid therapy to stimulate the functioning of the lubricating glands, lid hygiene, heated gland expression with the iLux device, and the use of specific lubricants and supplements. There have been significant advances in dry eye management in recent times and the Dry Eye Clinic will put these to use. In the majority of cases, follow-up visits are required to perform treatments and monitor the effect of the treatments.
Once management of the dry eye condition has been achieved, a maintenance program will be recommended and the patient will return to the referring optometrist for ongoing care.
